Among the best known carnivals in Italy, its origin dates back to the late 1800s.
The undisputed protagonists of the Viareggio Carnival are the gigantic papier-mâché floats that each year represent political and current issues in a satirical and irreverent key. They parade along a path designed between the avenues to the sea and the promenade together with the masks in the race.
On board the allegorical floats, dancers and figures entertain the public who watch their passage in time to music.
During the last day of Carnival, first and second category floats and masks, single and group, are awarded.
